The town hall was built in 1776 by the architect Thomas Baldwin, and its interior is recognized as one of the most beautiful and impressive in the style of Adam in the whole UK. Today it hosts meetings of the city council, consular departments and the internal market. Particularly noteworthy is the Banquet Hall, a neoclassical masterpiece, with three stunning huge chandeliers designed by William Parker in 1778. It also houses a collection of portraits by prominent British painters.
