Photo and description

The Chester City Hall is located in the city center. Built in 1698, the Exchange building on this site was destroyed by fire in 1862. William Henry Llyn of Belfast won the competition for the construction of the new city building. The Town Hall was officially opened on October 15, 1869 by the Prince of Wales (future King Edward VII) and then Prime Minister William Gladstone. In 1979, a clock with three dials was installed on the tower of the town hall, there is no dial on the west side of the tower.

The building was built in the neo-Gothic style, which was extremely popular at that time. The height of the tower (with a spire) reaches 49 meters. Near the entrance there are sculptures depicting significant events in the history of the city.

Inside the town hall there is a memorial dedicated to the memory of the townspeople, those killed in the First and Second World War. Historical values are kept in the treasury of the town hall: a sword with a handle of the 15th century and a scabbard and ornaments of the 17th century, a ceremonial rod (1668), as well as antique gold and silver dishes.

Now the city council and various departments occupy neighboring buildings , and the town hall remains only a symbol of city government. Weddings are held in the large hall of the town hall.
