Royal estate on Shahen – a small castle in the mountains near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, nearby is the Ellmau castle. One of the least known castles of Ludwig II of Bavaria.

The castle was built by Ludwig II from 1869 to 1872. in the style of a Swiss country house-chalet designed by Georg Dolmann. It is believed by many to be a hunting lodge, but Ludwig never used it that way. He came here several times a year – for birthday and any anniversary dates.

The small wooden house has a living room, bedroom, bathroom, study, a Turkish study that occupied the entire upper floor, a Turkish bath, ceremonial hall. The Turkish cabinet is decorated in a Moorish style. An attempt to recreate the style of the estates of the eastern rulers is clearly traced in the decoration of the house: the rooms are filled with luxurious rich furniture, decorated with lacquered decorative vases and chandeliers, peacock feathers, and thin handmade carpets. But compared to other palaces and castles built by Ludwig II, the estate looks even modest.

The garden, built in 1900 just below the estate, has now become a branch of the Munich Botanical Garden. It grows alpine plants from the Alps to the Himalayas.
