The hunting lodge was built by the Elector of the Palatinate, Otto Heinrich of the Wittelsbach family, for his wife, Susanna of Bavaria. The construction of the castle began in 1530 and lasted 25 years. The upper floors of the castle are decorated with frescoes by Jorg Broy the Younger. Initially, the hunting lodge was surrounded by a moat, but over time, the ditches were overgrown with silt and were filled up. Today the hunting lodge is owned by the foundation of the Wittelsbach house. It often hosts a variety of cultural events and concerts. In May every year (since 2005) there are Garden Days, in December – Christmas market.
