Rating: 7,6/10 (2054 votes) Plassenburg Fortress – a fortress in the mountains, located in the Bavarian city of Kulmbach. For the first time this fortress was mentioned in written sources from 1135. The Plassenburg fortress is the symbol of this small town and one of the most interesting castles in Germany. In 1554 the fortress was destroyed, later rebuilt by Kaspar Vischer. At the beginning of the 19th century, the city of Kulmbach passed to the territories of Bavaria. During this time, the castle was used as a prison and a military hospital. Today it houses a museum displaying collections of Prussian military art. The castle also hosts a variety of cultural events.
