The history of the castle begins in the XII century, when it was built by the Counts of Staufeneck. At the beginning of the 14th century, the castle became part of the Archbishopric of Salzburg. In 1503, the castle was significantly rebuilt under Archbishop Leonard von Koitschach. Then the castle was given the look that can be seen today. The castle has been owned by private individuals since 1894. Since the 20th century, a museum has been located within its walls. However, after a complete reconstruction of the castle, it was settled again. Since 2005, a costume festival has been held around the castle – a stylized medieval market opens here for a few days.
