Construction began under Frederick I. It was originally planned that the church would be named after the wife of King Sofia Louise of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. However, King Frederick William I, who ascended the throne after Frederick's death, opposed this plan. So the church was named Shpandau. It was only under the next king that the church received its present name.

The baroque tower of the church was erected by Johann Friedrich Groll in 1732-1734. At the end of the 19th century, the church was rebuilt: the ceiling was raised, and the floor was deepened, and a niche was made in the eastern wall. During that period, interior design was created,
