Zionskirche – a Protestant church in Berlin, famous for the fact that the pastor here was a participant in an anti-Nazi conspiracy, theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The church was built for seven whole years: from 1866 to 1703. It rises above a 52-meter-high hill. The German architect August Orth worked on the project of the church, developing the ideas of `` romantic historicism '' in architecture. The 67-meter-high church tower serves as a landmark, it can be seen from all sides. William I had a hand in the construction of this church: he established the Fund for Financial Support of New Church Buildings as a token of his gratitude to God for that he managed to escape death in Baden-Baden in 1861. From this fund, money was taken for the construction of the Zionskirche, which was inaugurated in 1873. Orth gave it a neo-Romanesque style with neo-Gothic elements. During the Second World War, Zionskirche was badly damaged. Due to the cold weather of the post-war winters, residents used pews and other interior items for firewood. In 1946, it was decided to brick up the windows in order to avoid further devastation of the temple. In the 50s of the XX century, the church was restored, in the 60s. – rebuilt. However, in the 70s. the roof and the heating system were damaged. Only in 1988, restoration work began again. After the unification of Germany, reconstruction work continued. But they are very tight the windows began to unfurl only at the beginning of the 21st century. In the fall of 2009, the interiors of the temple were already restored. The restoration is planned to be completed by 2015. However, the result of the work is already being criticized, and a discrepancy between the decoration of the historical significance of the Zionskirche is stated. There is an observation deck in the church tower, from where a view of Berlin from three sides opens. Also visible from the tower are the vaulted ceiling structures of the church. In summer, the church and observation deck are open to visitors. In 2002, an exhibition was organized here telling about the history of the temple and the city.
