Later, with the support of Constantine the First, the Cathedral of Hagia Sophia was built here, in which Serdicius Cathedral was held in 343. During the barbarian invasions, the basilica was badly damaged. In 537, Justinian the First Great completely rebuilt the church and also built the Imperial Cathedral of Constantinople. During the Middle Ages, this main cathedral church was a meeting place for the local bishop. The temple has survived to this day, and today Orthodox services are held here.
