Church of St. Mary – the oldest of the active Berlin churches, located in the city center, on Karl Liebknecht Street.
The church with the parish was first mentioned in 1292 sources. Then an imposing red brick church was built, firmly standing on a foundation of granite and cobblestone, in the brick Gothic style. The church was reconstructed several times: in 1663-1666. it acquired a baroque look through the efforts of Michael Matthias Smids, and in 1789-1790. Karl Gottgard Langgans elements of the neo-gothic style were introduced. In 1893-1895. a global reconstruction of the church was carried out under the leadership of Hermann Blankenstein, the next restoration was carried out after the Second World War, in 1969-1970.
Church of St. Mary – the only major church where services were held after World War II. During this period, the historical center of the city was practically destroyed, and the church stood alone in an open square surrounded by modern high-rise buildings. Today, along with the Red City Hall, the Church of St. Mary is the only reminder of the past of the historic city center.
