New National Gallery – Museum, part of the State Museums of Berlin. The museum exposition is dedicated to the art of the XX century.
The museum building, considered an icon of classical modernism, was built by 1968. Construction of a building designed by Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe lasted eight years and was completed a year before the author's death. New National Gallery – the only building erected by the architect after the war. It implements the idea of a universal space by Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe. A steel pavilion rises on an elongated granite terrace. It has two floors – main floor and basement. In the main, they hold changing exhibitions, and in the basement – permanent. An open garden adjoins them from the west, decorated with sculptures.
The collection of the New National Gallery contains objects of painting and sculpture of the XX century, from classicism to modern, impressionism. Among them, for example, the work of Max Benckmann, Ernst Kirchner, Edvard Munch, Barnett Newman, Pablo Picasso and others.
