The unusual castle Westerwinkel, or, as it is often called, the `` castle on the water '', is located in the town of Ascheberg, near Munster in Westphalia. It is one of the earliest castles in Germany, built in a stately Baroque architectural style. The castle was completely rebuilt in the middle of the 17th century (specifically in 1663), this is the variant we see today. The very first evidence of the existence of such a castle is by 1225. In shape, it resembles a quadrangle, almost completely closed. The external, rather gloomy appearance of the castle, as well as its location on two rectangular islands (that is, surrounded by water on all sides) reminds us that it was built not as a secular residence, but as an important defensive point. On one of the islands is the castle itself, on the other – a gorgeous garden. The trenches that were dug on the territory of the castle, as well as rather impressive fortress walls, were necessary during the battles of the Thirty Years' War. Architectural `` chip '' the castle is composed of small rows of windows with shutters painted with folklore patterns typical of the local area. In total, the castle is almost eight hundred years old. During this time, its owners managed to change many times. Today they are Counts von Merfeldt, who have owned these territories since 1555. Unfortunately, detailed information about how the castle looked then, unfortunately, has not survived. Today the territory of the castle, as external, and the interior spaces are completely open to tourists who have the opportunity to enjoy the special serene world of Westerwinkel Castle. The English-style park has excellent golf courses, scenic bike paths run around the castle, and any nearby tavern has a medieval atmosphere.
