The Church of San Rocco is located in the San Polo area.
The temple was built and named after Saint Roch – a healer from the plague. Every year on August 16, the doge attended the church, who prayed for the protection of the city from the `` black death. '' Nowadays, this tradition is played out in theatrical performance.
The construction of the cathedral began in 1489 and was completed only in 1508. The author of the project was the architect Bartolomeo Bon the Younger. In 1725 the temple was partially rebuilt. In the 1760s, a stunning facade was erected, decorated with many sculptures by Maccaruzzi.
Today, the church houses four paintings by the great painter Tintoretto.
