According to legend, the monastery was founded by Emperor Charlemagne in honor of the liberation of Siena from the plague fever. The abbey was first mentioned in writing in 813. In historical documents, the monastery appears as one of the most powerful and wealthy. However, after a while, most of the buildings of the monastery complex turned into ruins. In the 20th century, the monastery underwent a number of reconstruction works, during which it was completely restored. In 1976, monks of the Augustinian order settled in the monastery. All buildings in the complex were created from travertine. The side portals of the monastery were decorated with animal and plant motifs. Of particular note is the 12th century Romanesque basilica, considered one of the most beautiful in Tuscany. There is also a chapel built in the 8th century, which today functions as a sacristy. The Abbey of San Antimo, along with other attractions of the historic part of Siena, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
