Venetian Scuola - these are religious organizations, almost all founded for charitable purposes in the middle of the XIII century by the Dominicans and Franciscans. The construction of the Scuola St. Roch was begun in 1515 under Bartolomeo Bon and was completed only in 1549. The construction was financed by donations from the Venetians who wanted to enlist the support of Saint Roch, and Scuola quickly became one of the richest in the city. In 1564, Tintoretto was invited to paint the walls and ceiling of the building. His earliest works are in the small Hall of Albergo. The artist's later works occupy the Lower Hall of Scuola. There are about 50 works by Tintoretto in total.
