Imageis one of the most interesting museums in the city.

The museum was founded in Hagen in 1902. Its founder was Karl Ernst Osthaus, who for a long time specialized in Art Nouveau art objects. In 1921, after the death of the patron, his entire collection was sold to the Essen Museum of Volkswang.

The collection includes works of sculpture and painting, created in various artistic styles – dadaism, classicism, surrealism, impressionism, abstractionism and others. There are also collections of photography, graphics and works of applied art.

In the 1930s, most of the collection was lost, as the Nazis declared some of the exhibits to be degenerate art. During World War II, the rest of the collection was removed from the museum and sheltered from bombing. In 1945 the museum was completely destroyed.

At the end of the war, the museum began to buy back the lost exhibits from the new owners. Currently, the museum has about 600 paintings, 12 thousand graphic works, about 280 sculptures, more than 50 thousand photographs and works of applied art. A large collection of German art is exhibited, represented by such famous painters as Liebermann, Karus, Menzel, Kirchner, Baumeister, Friedrich, Spitzwerg, Richter, Muller, Beckmann, Mar, Heckel, etc., as well as French art, represented by the works of Picasso, Gauguin , Monet, Cezanne, Delaunay, Van Gogh, Signac, Dali, Renoir and others. There are works by contemporary artists and sculptors.
