The Evangelical Church of the Cross is located in the Stadtkern district of Essen.

At the end of the 19th century, during the industrialization of the Ruhr region, the population in Essen continued to grow rapidly.   A particularly large number of workers with their families came from the Prussian eastern provinces, where the population was mainly Protestant. At that time, the evangelical community in the city center already numbered more than 50 thousand people. As a result, it was decided to build a new evangelical church in the central part of the city.

The construction was launched on the foundations of an old church built in the 16th century. The project was created by the Berlin architect August Orth. The architect was based on the Berlin Thanksgiving Church, which was later destroyed during the Second World War.

The foundation of the church took place in October 1894. The construction of the temple was carried out on donations, which were collected by the Essen Civic Association. The consecration of the church took place in December 1896.

The church was made in the form of a Latin cross with a towering bell tower located in the western part of the building.

During the Second World War, the temple was completely destroyed. The restoration work of the church began in 1949 and was completed 4 years later. In 1953, the church was re-consecrated. In 1968, the largest organ in Essen was installed in the temple,
