Prince Max's Palace is a typical building from the time the city was founded. The palace got its name in honor of Maximilian of Baden, who was the last chancellor of the German Empire.

Construction of the palace began in 1881 and finished in 1884. The author of the project was the architect Josef Durm. Upon completion of the construction, the building was acquired by the banker August Schmieder and set up a retirement home in it. In 1894, the palace was acquired by Prince Maximilian of Baden.

During the Second World War, the palace was seriously damaged. Renovation works were soon carried out in the building, after which it housed the Federal Constitutional Court, and then the College of Education.
