The Baden State Theater is one of the most interesting places in the city of Karlsruhe.

The building of the first Baden theater was built in 1808. Friedrich Weinbrenner was appointed the author of the project. In February 1847, a massive fire broke out in the theater, 63 people died in a stampede at that time. The building itself was completely destroyed.

The second theater was built in 1853 under the supervision of the architect Heinrich Hubsch. During the Second World War, the building was destroyed during an air raid. Nowadays, this place is the location of the Federal Constitutional Court.

The modern theater building was built in 1964 by the architect Helmut Batzner, however, the opening took place only in 1975. Today the theater is a complex building consisting of two halls with a capacity of 1002 and 330 seats. The theater complex also includes the Baden State Chapel and the Baden State Choir.

Next to the main entrance you can see the sculptural composition"Horse of the Muses" by Jurgen Hertz.

Every year since 1985 the theater has traditionally held the"Festival of Handel". On this day, the theater staged works by this famous German composer.
