The Grand Ducal Tomb is a mausoleum chapel built in 1889-1896 in the Fazanov Garden according to preliminary designs by architects Friedrich Hemberger and Franz Beer.
The tomb was built by the order of the Grand Duke Frederick I and his wife Louise of Prussia. This decision was made by them after the early death of their son Ludwig Wilhelm. Previously, the resting place of members of the princely family was the castle church of St. Michael or the crypt of the city church. The parents wanted to arrange the burial of their son away from the noise of the city, so they chose a place in the middle of the Hardtwald forest.
