The prison located in Karlsruhe is one of the correctional institutions of Baden-Wurttemberg and at the same time an architectural landmark of the city. A branch of the prison is located in Rastatt. The prison building was created in 1894-1897 by the architect Josef Durm, in the neo-Renaissance style. The window frames and plinths were made of sandstone, while the material for the outer walls was reddish-red bricks. During the Second World War, the roof of the building was completely destroyed, but was restored and covered with slate in a short time. The windows of the cells overlook the courtyard, therefore the windows facing the street do not have bars, thereby not spoiling the architectural appearance of the building.
