The present temple was founded in 1265 by the Franciscan Order. The Order received a plot as compensation for another plot seized by Charles the First of Anjou for the construction of the fortress of Castel Nuovo. On the territory of the monastery complex there is also a museum introducing the history of the church. The site of the temple is a typical example of the city's layering of structures from different eras. The building of the monastery was built in the 13th century on the site where the basilica was located, dating back to the 6th century. After archaeological excavations were carried out under the church, part of the market of the Roman era was discovered. In 1742, the monastery complex was completely rebuilt. The work was supervised by the architect Sanfelice. In the course of the work, the main facade with elements of the XIV century was preserved – a huge portal with a wooden door. Today the building is a single-nave basilica with an apse and nine chapels, which are adjacent to the bypass gallery. Nowadays, in the chapels, you can see a statue made by Tino da Camaino, and the tomb of Catherine of Austria. In one of the chapels there are frescoes created by the Neapolitan students of Giotto. In the monastery complex, special attention should be paid to the Chapter Hall, decorated with ornamental painting, and the Sixtus Fifth Room, We also recommend reading Piazza Gesu Nuovo in Italy, Naples resort Topic: Church of San Lorenzo Maggiore in Italy, Naples resort. |
