The opening of the theater took place in November 1737, accompanied by an opera by the Italian playwright Pietro Metastasio. Upon completion, the theater hall of San Carlo was considered the most spacious in the world. In the 19th century, Rossini was in charge of the theater, who was then replaced by Donizetti, and then by Nicola Box. In 1816, a fire broke out in the theater, but the building was soon restored. Further reconstruction work in the theater took place in 1845, 1854 and in the middle of the 20th century.
