Sant Elmo is a fortress located on the hill of the same name, not far from the Carthusian monastery of St. Martin. Both of these structures can be observed from almost anywhere in the city. The castle got its name in honor of the old church built on this site in the X century.
The construction of the fortress was started in 1329 during the reign of Robert of Anjou. The construction was completed in 1343, the year of the king's death. In 1537-1546 the fortress was restored by Pedro Alvarez de Toledo – Spanish governor of the king.
The castle has a star-shaped shape with six ramparts. In 1647, during the revolution, the Spanish Viceroy took refuge in the fortress.
