Both of these structures can be observed from almost anywhere in the city. The castle got its name in honor of the old church built on this site in the X century. The construction of the fortress was started in 1329 during the reign of Robert of Anjou. The construction was completed in 1343, the year of the king's death. In 1537-1546 the fortress was restored by Pedro Alvarez de Toledo – Spanish governor of the king. The castle has a star-shaped shape with six ramparts. In 1647, during the revolution, the Spanish Viceroy took refuge in the fortress.
