Image Castle Guestrow (or Guestrow Castle) is located in the city of the same name in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This building represents the renaissance style of northern Germany. Famous architects from Italy and Holland took part in the construction of the castle.
The appearance of the castle is very majestic and unusual, it attracts the attention of tourists to this day. However, the fate of this piece of architecture can be called quite changeable. The building has performed a variety of functions throughout its history. A distinctive feature of the castle is that it was not subjected to such global destruction as many other castles and fortresses in Germany.
The elegant building was originally erected on the site of a Slavic fortress with the same name that was once located here. Since 1436, Gustrow Castle belonged to the Dukes of Mecklenburg, who from time to time subjected it to reconstruction. In the 16th century, the castle withstood a number of fires, but their scale was insignificant, and the appearance of the building was quickly restored. In 1587-1591. the north wing of the castle was completed and the east wing was expanded.
Throughout the 17th century, the castle constantly passed from one Duke of Mecklenburg to another, but none of them made it their permanent residence for a long time. As a result of inattention to this work of architecture, some parts of the castle were badly dilapidated and were demolished, and others were rented. In the early 19th century, the building served as premises for a military hospital, and later for a nursing home.
Since 1972, the castle has received close attention as an architectural monument and historical value. There was a museum (today it is a branch of the Schwerin State Museum) with works of art from different eras. As far back as the 16th century, the owners of the castle managed to collect a collection of weapons, make fancy wall paintings and create a beautiful garden around the building. Today tourists can admire all this.
