Rating: 7,9/10 (1542 votes) Bakar Castle is a medieval fortress located 20 kilometers from the town of Rijeka. Its construction began in 1225, after the lands of Bakar were transferred to the use of the Duke of Zrinski, and the structure that we see now appeared here in the 16th century. Its reconstruction began by decree of King Ferdinand I, who sought to protect the city and all its inhabitants from constant Turkish attacks. The Bakar castle itself is small, but it looks impressive. There are no decorative elements on the austere massive stone walls; only narrow loophole windows can be seen on them, which are closed by wooden shutters. The ancient towers are connected from the inside by walls-passages.
