The park was founded by order of Benito Mussolini – Prime Minister, who was seriously concerned about the preservation of the remains of the Pontine Marshes. In 1939, a team of paleontologists discovered a Neanderthal skull in one of the grottoes, similar in structure to the skull found in France in the grotto of La -Chapelle-au-Seine. The skull was found surrounded by stones. Also, objects and tools related to the Mousterian culture were found here. Territorially, the park occupies about 8.5 km 2. The park also includes the island of Zannone, the forest near San Felice Circeo and the coastal strip near the cities of Terracina and Anzio. The Circeo Reserve was divided into five conditional zones – Cape Monte Circeo, Forest, Marshes, Coastal Dunes and Zannone Island.
