The Church of Santa Maria Antikova is located in the southern part of the Roman Forum. The temple is famous for its ensemble of early medieval murals, unmatched in terms of completeness in Rome.

The church first became known in 1701. The very first archaeological excavations were carried out here in 1901, led by Giacomo Boni. Over time, some of the frescoes fell into disrepair and required constant attention from restorers. For a long time, the church was closed to visitors.

The temple was built in the 1st century. In the 6th century, the temple was used as a sentry box. Rather, a number of reconstruction works were carried out in the building, during which it was decorated with murals and decorated with Corinthian columns. An apse was also added to the building, after which it was consecrated in honor of the Virgin Mary.

Under one of the columns archaeologists discovered a treasure of coins with the image of Justin II.
