The basilica was erected during the reign of Pope Paschalia the First in 820 on the foundations of old buildings. Since that time, in the apse of the church, a mosaic has been preserved with the image of the Madonna holding a scarf, angels and Pope Paschal I, kneeling before the Virgin Mary. During the construction, antique columns of the Corinthian and Ionic order were used inside the building. At the bottom of the apse, you can see frescoes by Lazzaro Baldi depicting the Apostle John and John the Baptist. In 1513, Cardinal Giovanni de Medici ordered the rebuilding of the church in the Renaissance style. Since that time, the magnificent facade created by Andrea Sansovino and the coffered ceiling, decorated with white reliefs, have survived. Two antique Roman sarcophagi that were discovered during archaeological excavations are kept in one of the naves of the church. The remains of structures dating back to the 3rd century were also found under the church.
