This church, due to its location, played an important role in the life of Rome in the Middle Ages. Until the 9th century on the site of the church there was a monastery adhering to the Greek rite. The current basilica was built by the Franciscans and Bernardines from the ruins of ancient buildings. In the 14th century, a monumental staircase leading to the temple was solemnly opened by the tribune of Cola di Rienzo.
