Wasserburg Castle was first mentioned in written sources in 1185. The aristocrat Dietmar von Wassenburg is considered the first owner of the castle. Until the 13th century, Wasserburg remained in the possession of the von Wasserburg family, the most notable of which was Heinrich von Wasserburg, a relative of the famous Count von Liechtenstein. Legend has it that von Liechtenstein took the lead in freeing King Richard the Lionheart. In 1238, the nobleman Otto von Haslau took possession of the castle. A couple of years later, the estate passed into the possession of the aristocratic Puchberger family.

In the 14th century, the von Toppel family became the owners of the castle, but already in 1515 Christoph von Sinsendorf bought the castle. The Zinsendorf family lived in Wasserburg for over four centuries.

During the First World War, the castle functioned as a rest house for soldiers from the front. In 1923, Count Karl Hugo Seilern bought the castle, which still belongs to his family.
