Photo and description

On the outskirts of the Austrian city of Sankt Polten there is a beautiful ancient castle Pottenbrunn, around which there is still a moat filled with water. The only way to get to the castle is via a stone bridge. The castle also has a beautiful English-style well-kept park, which covers an area of 2500 square meters.

Pottenbrunn Castle was first mentioned in the 12th century. Throughout the history of its existence, the castle changed owners many times and was rebuilt, paying tribute to the fashion of different eras.

Since 1505, the castle was at the disposal of Sebastian Grabner, at whose behest a tower with an open arched gallery was built, which has survived to our days days. Major changes were made in 1600 by Sebastian Grabner Jr., who expanded the castle significantly. An English-style garden was also created, where visitors can walk today.

In 1920, the castle was reconstructed in the east wing. 6 years later, since 1926, the castle passed into the possession of the Trauttmansdorff family. By the end of World War II, the owners of the castle were shot, and Pottenbrunn himself, being in the combat zone, was badly damaged. Until 1955, the castle was on the territory of the Soviet occupation. In 1961, the dilapidated tower collapsed, but after 5 years it was restored again.

In 2005 the castle was completely restored. The stone bridge over the moat was repaired, the roofs, facade and windows were replaced. Arriving here today, you can see an elegant building with open arched galleries, high towers, crowned with domes and a beautiful garden with century-old trees.

Pottenbrunn Castle has an interesting collection of ancient cups, but there is no way to get inside the castle to get acquainted with the magnificent interiors. The castle is currently closed for excursions.
