The church is the oldest building in the city, built in the neoclassical style. The temple was built according to the project of the Russian architect Yakov Perrin, who created the St. Petersburg Admiralty, in 1799-1801. Today, as before, the church strikes the imagination with its magnificent facade with columns, a large bell tower and a dome crowned with a large cross. Inside the church, valuable and rather unusual icons are kept, in particular, the image of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker against the background of a seascape - the saint is depicted on the island of Kotkansaari during the Battle of Ruotsinsalmi. All the interior decoration of the church is permeated with an atmosphere of harmony, peace and love. On the altar side of the church there is an old cemetery, where the remains of Russian sailors who died in 1790 during the battle on the frigate"Nikolay" were buried. At the main entrance to the church stands a sculpture of Mary Purple, the woman who prevented the destruction of the temple during the Crimean War.
