Photo and description

One of the most picturesque squares in Rome is the Plaza de Espana. The square got its name from the building of the Spanish embassy located on it. In the center of the square is the famous Boat Fountain Pietro Bernini (1627-1629). This is truly a living and imaginative embodiment of a sinking boat, from the stern and bow of which jets of water flow.

The Plaza de Espana is famous for its Staircase, the steps of which, made entirely of travertine by the architect Francesco de Sanctis (1723-1726), rise up to Trinito dei Monti square. Its twelve aisles, sometimes narrower and sometimes wider, lead to the imposing building of the Church of Trinita dei Monti. This is one of the city's grandest Franciscan churches. Its construction began in 1503, and subsequently in different periods it has undergone redevelopment and renovation. The austere facade, by the architect Carlo Moderna, with one order of pilasters and a wide portal framed by columns, is crowned with an attic with a balustrade. The interior with a large nave contains beautiful works of art: frescoes by Naldini, Daniele de Volterra, Federico and Taddeo Zuccari, and others.
