Photo and description
Hajikabul is a large lake in the Republic of Azerbaijan. It is located in the Kura-Arak lowland, south-west of Baku, in the Adjikabul region, near the city of Shirvan. It is very convenient to get to the lake, since the railway runs near it. The lake was formed due to the natural waste of the Caspian Sea in a certain geological period.
Of course, by Russian standards, Hajikabul is a small lake. Its maximum width is 3 km and its maximum length is 6 km. And it is not very deep - its maximum depth reaches 5 m. The total area of Lake Hajikabul is about 1668 hectares. The lake is fed through a special channel by the waters of the Kura River. The average water temperature ranges from 5 ° to 28.5 °. As for the transparency of water, it is within 0.06-2.5 m.
Fish such as grass carp, pike, barbel, carp, pike perch and catfish are caught in the lake. The spring floods of the Kura River significantly increase the area of the lake. However, this does not affect the quality of the catch at all. Of the aquatic plants in the lake, lake reeds, cattails, reeds, hornwort and water buttercup are widely found. In winter, Lake Hajikabul does not freeze, so here you can see a huge number of various species of migratory birds.
There is a lot of controversy about the name of Lake Adjikabul. The lake may have been named after one of the pilgrims who made the Hajj to Mecca. According to another version, the root of the name comes from the Turkic word “aji”, which means “bitter”. Lakes with similar names are very common in the area. For example, Adzhi-Darya in the western part of Turkmenistan, Adzhi-nour on the southern slopes of the Caucasian ridge,
