Karl-Marx-Hof is the most famous municipal residential building in Vienna, located in the 19th district of the city. Karl-Marx-Hof is the longest residential building in the world.

In 1927, by a special order of the Austrian Social Democratic Party, the architect Karl En, who is a follower of Otto Wagner, began building the house. The ruling party wanted to defeat poverty in the city, a tax on luxury (cars, servants, property ownership) was introduced. It was with this money that 64 thousand apartments were built for those in need, including Karl-Marx-Hof. The building was completed in three years, and it took 25 million bricks to build. The house is 1100 meters long, it has 98 entrances, between which there are 4 tram stops. Small apartments (30-60 sq. m) with a total number of 1382 pieces, which are home to about 5000 people. Common areas include laundries, baths, kindergartens, libraries and doctors' offices.

Karl-Marx-Hof was involved in the February 1934 February Uprising. The rebels barricaded themselves inside the building and were forced to surrender after the Austrian army and police began bombing the building, ignoring the unarmed residents and families of ordinary workers. As a result, the house was taken by government forces on the second day of the fighting. Karl-Marx-Hof was badly damaged and was renovated in 1950.

The house has been used as a filming location for several films, including The Night Porter.
