Forum of Marx and Engels – sculptural ensemble, erected in the 1980s. in the Mitte district of Berlin, near the city hall. Before World War II, this site housed ordinary residential buildings and commercial buildings, almost completely destroyed by the bombing and demolished after 1945. The rest of the buildings were demolished in the 70s. The sculptor Ludwig Engelhardt was the artistic director of the project. The monument, built according to his design, was opened in April 1986. The ensemble consists of a sculpture by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels and a relief wall behind it, made of Bulgarian marble. On the other side of the square is a composition of bronze reliefs by Margrethe Middell, which depicts scenes of life in a free society. Between these two objects are tetrahedral pillars with photographs reflecting the history of labor. Arno Fischer, Peter Voight, Norbert Blum, Hans Gutheil, Jurgen Frenkel, Gunter Kohler and Friedrich Nostitz were involved in this project.
