Assos is an ancient Greek city located on top of a rocky steep hill that slopes down in terraces from the sea side.

According to archaeological data, the city was founded in the 13th century BC by the Hittites. In the 8th century, the Greek colonists founded their own colony here, and in 540 BC – the temple of Athena was built.

Hermeus – a student and grandson of Plato, tried to apply the theory of an ideal city in practice, deploying extensive construction here and erecting gymnasiums at the temple of Athena.

From 347 to 344 BC, the famous philosopher and scientist Aristotle lived and worked in the city ... In Assos, he also founded a school of philosophy and married his niece Hermias.

In the Middle Ages, the city was plundered by the Ottomans, and the once majestic buildings were dismantled by local residents   to build their homes,

The ancient city was discovered only in 1880 by the American Francis Bacon.

Today you can observe the acropolis located at a height 238 meters, on the top of the cliff, the ruins of the temple of Athena, the old cemetery, the partially restored theater, the chaos of ancient stones and part of the fortress wall.

Today, around this ancient city is the charming ancient village of Assos, which has long been banned from construction   new modern buildings, and the restoration of old structures can only be done through the typical local stone.
