The railway South Bridge is a historical and architectural monument and is under state protection. Nowadays, the bridge is mainly used for the movement of freight trains.

Construction of the bridge began in November 1906 and lasted for 4 years. The opening took place in April 1910 without any solemn ceremony, which was due to the mourning for the workers who died during the construction. The entrance to the South Bridge was decorated with towers designed by Franz Schwechten in the neo-Romanesque style (the architect designed similar towers for the Hohenzollern Bridge).

During the Second World War, the bridge was seriously damaged. Construction work began immediately after the end of the war, and movement resumed in 1946.
