The Deutz Bridge is one of the landmarks of Cologne. The bridge connects the right-bank district of Deutz with the district of Heumarkt.

The first bridge on this site was built back in 310 by the Romans. The bridge was a wooden structure mounted on stone supports. After the Roman emperor Constantine, the bridge gradually began to deteriorate, as it was not used. In the 10th century, Bruno the First, Archbishop of Cologne, ordered the demolition of the remains of the bridge. In 1898, the last pillar of this bridge was demolished.

During the Middle Ages, a cable-ferry crossing operated here. The new bridge (pontoon) was built in 1822. In order to ensure the possibility of navigation three times a day, the middle part of the bridge was turned.

In the middle of the 19th century, during the design of the Cathedral Bridge, it was decided to create a railway and street bridge, but the plans were never implemented. The cathedral bridge was erected only for railway traffic, and the pontoon bridge began to function as a street one.

In 1913, the construction of a suspension bridge designed by Karl Moritz was started on the site of the pontoon bridge, which continued on for two years. In 1935, the bridge was named after Paul von Hindenburg, Reich President of the Weimar Republic.

During World War II, the bridge collapsed as it was overloaded with military vehicles and refugees.

In 1947, construction began on a new bridge in place of the collapsed one, which lasted only one year. The author of the project was Gerd Lomer. When completed, the bridge was the first all-steel bridge in the world.

Expansion work began in 1976. Prior to that, the width of the bridge was 20.6 meters, at the end of the work – 31.5 meters.

Nowadays, art exhibitions are held from time to time inside the concrete structures of the bridge.
