British Admiralty Arch, London Resort

Through the bridge, the Arch connects with the"Old Admiralty Building", which houses the Royal Navy Headquarters. It is thanks to this neighborhood that the landmark got its name. The idea of creating the Arch belongs to King Edward VII. The building was intended for his mother, Queen Victoria. The design of the building was entrusted to the architect Aston Webb, whose shoulders lay work on such buildings as Buckingham Palace and the Victoria and Albert Museum. According to Webb's plan, the alley that was located here was supposed to become the royal boulevard, the arch - a barrier between the territory of the palace and Trafalgar Square. The architect's project was successfully implemented in 1912 after the death of the king. The Admiralty Arch is actually not one arch, but a complex of structures of five arched passages, which were built using Portland stone. Initially, the interior of the structure was adapted for the offices of sea lords, here was the residence of the commanders of the Royal Navy. However, above all, the structure was assigned a ceremonial role. Each arch has its own role. The central arch is intended for special occasions, two large arches are needed for the passage of cars, two smaller arches are for pedestrians. Now in some of the premises of the landmark are British government offices and partly the Admiralty Library. The majestic and solemn appearance of the Admiralty Arch received thanks to the Corinthian columns located in the center of the structure, and the pilasters of the wings curving in a semicircle around Mall Street. From here you can clearly see Buckingham Palace, the distance to which is equal to one kilometer. The arch has many interesting decorations. On one side of the building you can see an inscription in Latin, which immortalized the names of King Edward VII and Queen Victoria for centuries. From other angles, the Admiralty Arch is decorated with a number of curious sculptures. So from the inside of the building, a ledge is visible, resembling a human nose in all respects. Witty contemporaries of the landmark suggested that this nose was a tribute to the Duke of Wellington, famous for his prominent nose. Looking beyond the walls of the landmark, you can find a statue dedicated to the English military and famous traveler Captain James Cook.
