It was built in the middle of the 18th century according to the plan of the architect James Payne. Over the years, the building has belonged to different owners. At the end of the 18th century it was owned by the Duke of York Frederick, in the 19th century it passed to the Melbourne family. The house got its name thanks to the Baron of Dover, who lived there since 1830. In the late 19th century, the British government bought Dover House from the heirs of the baron.
