ImageThe castle was built in the XII century at the initiative of King Henry II. According to historical records, the castle was built between 1165 and 1173. Towards the end of its construction, the castle became the central keep, which was surrounded by a powerful outer wall. For more than one and a half hundred years, the castle belonged to the Crown. In 1336 it was transferred by King Edward III to Robert Ufford, Earl of Sufflock. The rest of the time, except for short periods of time in the 19th and 20th centuries, the castle belonged to private individuals. Over time, its outer wall was destroyed, part of the stone was sold, and part was completely plundered. Donjon remained intact only because it was the ideal reference point for the merchants who traveled to the area. During the wars with Napoleon, the castle was part of signaling stations. A little later, in the 19th century, the castle was the summer home of the owners of the Sadbjorn estate. The castle was equipped for a very comfortable stay, first by the Marquis of Hetford, and then by Richard Wallace - the upper chambers of the tower were even furnished. After Wallace, the castle changed owners seven more times. The last of these was Arthur Chechman, Member of Parliament, who in 1928 transferred it to the property of England. In 1929, the castle was taken over by the Orford Heritage organization. She immediately began to restore it, and a year later the castle became available to the general public. During World War II, Orford suffered greatly as he was requisitioned for military purposes. In 1962, the castle was transferred to the Ministry of Works. And since 1984, the castle has been owned by the English Heritage organization. Orford has a wonderful museum that you should definitely visit. The museum was opened in 2005 and its collection is regularly updated. Basically, there are items that tell about the ancient history of this place. It contains securities, regalia, scrolls and charters, which also tell about the history of the town of Orford. In the exposition of the museum you can see exhibits from the times of the Roman conquest and objects of the Anglo-Saxon culture. Recently, a large number of buckles, seals, coins and other items of historical interest have been found in Orford. In addition to antiquity and the Middle Ages, the museum's exposition touches on the history of Orford in the 18th-19th centuries.
