The old courtyard was built immediately after the division of Bavaria in 1255 under Ludwig Strog. It flourished during the reign of Ludwig the Bavarian, who was the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1328 to 1347. Since the 17th century, the Old Court acquires only administrative significance. The main feature of the building is the Monkey Tower. As the legends say, one day, a monkey who escaped from the menagerie kidnapped the baby Ludwig, who later became the emperor, and climbed up the tower with him.
