Romer – the old town hall, located in Frankfurt am Main. The Town Hall has been a universally recognized symbol of the city for six centuries. The building is notable for its stepped pediment.

The Town Hall was made up of three previously independent buildings, it was named after the central one (the House of the Roman). However, the origin and history of the name is unknown.

The history of the town hall dates back to the 14th century, when the town hall needed new premises. Then, residential buildings in the city center were bought. After that, a reconstruction was carried out, as a result of which the Imperial Hall and the room for the election of the emperor were created in the town hall. This room is decorated with frescoes with coats of arms and portraits of representatives of different classes. Gradually, these two buildings were connected with nearby buildings.

For a long time, Romer was the venue for the coronations of German emperors and kings. The meetings of the Reichstag were often held here. Sometimes fairs were held in the building of the town hall.

During the Second World War, the town hall was badly damaged, in the post-war period it was restored. This is how Romer acquired a modern look, but despite this, the building belongs to the most significant Gothic buildings of secular purpose.
