August the Strong, the famous Saxon kurfurst, decides to place in the palace a collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain. This required a restructuring, which was undertaken by the famous architect Mateus Pepelman. According to his plan, the facades of the palace should become more restrained, and the roofs should be double. Even after the restructuring the decor of the palace acquired only distant features of oriental architecture, it was nevertheless named Japanese, thanks to the collection placed in it. The bombing of Dresden during the World War II significantly destroyed the Japanese Palace building. The restoration was completed in 1952, and since that time it houses a museum of ancient history and anthropology, as well as various thematic exhibitions are often held in the palace building.
