Jungfernbrucke (Maiden Bridge) – the oldest bridge in Berlin, the only drawbridge in the city.

The bridge was erected at the turn of the 17th & 18th   centuries, during the reign of Friedrich Wilhelm. The author of the bridge, as the chronicles say, is Martin Grunberg. The bridge was originally made of wood. In 1798, the bridge, already named Jungfernbrucke, was replaced by a new one made of iron and wood. The central part of the bridge, as before, was raised with the help of chains and wheels.

The historical appearance of the bridge has been preserved to this day.

There are several legends about the origin of the name of the bridge: one of them tells that not far from the bridge there were men's baths, and therefore girls were not allowed to enter the bridge; another says that there was a wedding custom, according to which the creak of the bridge boards under the bride's feet raised doubts about her innocence, of course, the boards always creaked; another legend says that on the bridge there was a small closet where the best seamstresses in the city worked; the latter mentions that girls of easy virtue worked on the bridge. Thus, various stories and amusing legends are associated with the bridge.
