In 1950, the president of the Pirelli concern; proposed to build the first skyscraper in Milan on the site where the first production facilities of the company were located in the 19th century. The tower was designed by Gio Ponti with the assistance of Pier Luigi Nervi, who insisted on a revolutionary departure from the traditional of that time, rectangular skyscrapers.
