The Burgplatz square is the center of the historic part of Düsseldorf. The area is located on the Rhine coast. In 1995, the square was included in the list of historical and architectural monuments. In the 17th century, on the initiative of Johann-Wilhelm, the castle became the seat of the Electors of the Palatinate. After the death of Johann Wilhelm, it ceases to exist as the residence of the electors. At the end of the 18th century, the castle was seriously damaged by shelling by the French Revolutionary Army. At the beginning of the 20th century, the western wall of the castle was demolished, as a result, the Burgplatz square received an open access to the Rhine River. A promenade was organized on the embankment, and a pier was created right next to the square. At the end of World War II, the Düssel Tower was demolished because it interfered with the construction of the B1 federal highway. In the 1980s, due to heavy traffic on the B1 highway, it was decided to build a tunnel. The tunnel was opened in 1993. In connection with the space freed from car traffic, it was decided to design the Burgplatz in a new way. To this end, in 1991, the city authorities announced a competition for the best design of the square, in which the project was won by architects Benedikt Stahl, Niklaus Fritschy and Gunther Baum. The construction of the Burgplatz was completed in 1995. Nowadays, the square is a favorite pedestrian zone for both tourists and townspeople.
