It is separated from the Italian island of Sardinia by a small strait. It is believed that the city was founded by the Tuscan marquis Bonifacio and named after him. In the old center The city is home to the Aragonese staircase of 187 steps, carved out of stone in just one night during the siege of the city by the Spanish army. Old houses can only be accessed by ladders through the second floor. The town is imbued with the spirit of the past, the Gothic Cathedral of St. Dominic (founded in the 14th century) and the Church of St. Mary (built in the 13th century) inspire awe of the city's art, history and culture. There is a picturesque port on the coast, with boats at their disposal for daily boat trips. There are also excursions to the sea caves.
